چکیده

We describe the evaluation of the registration of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans with X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scans of the human brain. A CT scan and a PET scan of the same person were obtained with fiducial markers placed on the person's head. The CT scan and the PET scan were then registered, first by using the fiducial markers, and next by applying the registration method currently under question, completely ignoring fiducial markers. In both cases, the positions of fiducial markers in PET scan and the positions of corresponding fiducial markers in CT scan were compared. The results based on aligning only one patient scans are encouraging, and in the future we hope to obtain more PET and CT scan pairs to validate the registration method. Automated classification of pulmonary nodules through a retrospective analysis of conventional CT and two-phase PET images in patients undergoing biopsy

Objective(s): Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) examination is commonly used for the evaluation of pulmonary nodules since it provides both anatomical and functional information. However, given the dependence of this evaluation on physician’s subjective judgment, the results could be variable. The purpose of this study was to develop an automated scheme for the classific...

Comparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...

A Novel Subsampling Method for 3D Multimodality Medical Image Registration Based on Mutual Information

Mutual information (MI) is a widely used similarity metric for multimodality image registration. However, it involves an extremely high computational time especially when it is applied to volume images. Moreover, its robustness is affected by existence of local maxima. The multi-resolution pyramid approaches have been proposed to speed up the registration process and increase the accuracy of th...

Evaluation of methods of co-segmentation on PET/CT images of lung tumor: simulation study

Introduction: Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Nowadays PET/CT plays an essential role in radiotherapy planning specially for lung tumors as it provides anatomical and functional information simultaneously that is effective in accurate tumor delineation. The optimal segmentation method has not been introduced yet, however several ...

New Pseudo-CT Generation Approach from Magnetic Resonance Imaging using a Local Texture Descriptor

Background: One of the challenges of PET/MRI combined systems is to derive an attenuation map to correct the PET image. For that, the pseudo-CT image could be used to correct the attenuation. Until now, most existing scientific researches construct this pseudo-CT image using the registration techniques. However, these techniques suffer from the local minima of the non-rigid deformation energy f...

PET, CT, and MR Image Registration of the Rat Brain and Skull

Spatially registered positron emission tomography (PET), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) images of the same small animal offer potential advantages over PET alone: CT images should allow accurate, nearly noise-free correction of the PET image data for attenuation; the CT or MR images should permit more certain identification of structures evident in the PET images; and CT ...
